TWO CHURCHES HOLD JOINT SERVICES THIS SUMMER

Posted on June 23, 2017 at 1:30 PM

In 1999 the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America recognized each other's ministries, sacraments and clergy and the two denominations vowed to cooperate as Christians called to a common mission. Since 2001 Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church and St. Francis in the Keys Episcopal Church have had joint Lenten services and a joint Easter sunrise service. Since 2012 the Rev. Chris Todd has presided over the worship services at each church. This summer starting on July 2nd the churches will hold joint services at 9:30 am each Sunday as a further expression of Christian love and unity. And the public is invited to come.

The two congregations will meet together at Lord of the Seas on the first and third Sundays of the month. They will come together at St. Francis in the Keys on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. (On the fifth Sunday in July, the 30th, the churches will meet at St. Francis.) Though their worship services are very similar and their hymns are often the same, each parish will experience the unique and delightful contributions their sister denomination has made to Christian tradition. The Lord of the Seas choir will sing at every worship service. There will be a coffee hour after each gathering.

The sites of the two churches are only a quarter of a mile apart. Lord of the Seas is located at 1250 Key Deer Blvd, a mile and a quarter from the only stoplight on Big Pine Key. St. Francis in the Keys is at 1600 Key Deer Blvd, just south of Watson Blvd.
