Two churches on Big Pine will commemorate the climax of Jesus' ministry during Holy Week. St. Francis in the Keys Episcopal Church and Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church will join to celebrate the 3 days that created the Christian movement. The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, February 14. For the 16th straight year, Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church and St. Francis in the Keys Episcopal Church will hold joint Lenten services. Those who want imposition of ashes before work can comes to St. Francis at 9:00 am Wednesday. Those who want to get their ashes after work or school can come to Lord of the Seas at 7 pm that evening. St. Francis in the Keys will be open for worship once again on December 24.
Like many residents, after Irma the folks from St. Francis were not immediately able to use their building upon returning. So they worshiped with their gracious fellow Christians at Lord of the Seas Lutheran church, alternating liturgies. In the meantime St. Francis' building and grounds became the headquarters of All Hands, the volunteer group that has helped clean up 200 properties and homes.Read Full Post »

In 1999 the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America recognized each other's ministries, sacraments and clergy and the two denominations vowed to cooperate as Christians called to a common mission. Since 2001 Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church and St. Francis in the Keys Episcopal Church have had joint Lenten services and a joint Easter sunrise service. Since 2012 the Rev. The joint Lenten program between Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church and St. Francis in the Keys Episcopal Church will come to a climax this Holy Week.
The two congregations will come together to celebrate Maundy Thursday at 7 pm at St. Francis. They will commemorate Jesus instituting the Lord's Supper, washing the feet of his disciples and giving his new commandment to love each other as he loves us. The Rev. All creatures great and small are invited to the annual Blessing of the Animals Sunday October 2 at St. Francis in the Keys Church. Celebrated near the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, pets of all kinds will be blessed. The Celtic liturgy will emphasize the beauty of God's creation. St. Francis in the Keys will kick off its celebration of Christmas week with the Greening of the Church after the 8:30 am service on Sunday the 20th. Come to decorate the sanctuary and stay for the delicious lunch afterwards.

The 13th annual joint observance of Lent by St. Francis-in-the-Keys Episcopal Church and Lord of the Seas Lutheran Church climaxes with Holy Week.
